JULY 2017: Skater of the Month

Melotraumatic #8, Death Row Rumblers

Do you have a favorite derby memory?

Passing assessments and getting drafted. It took me three tries to pass (three Underworld sessions!) so when it happened, it was surreal.

What's the most rewarding aspect of playing the game?

It's hard to pick one thing! I really enjoy learning new things from the people around me. I loved winning the last game with my team last season. One of the most surprising rewards as a member of this league has been the charity work. With DDD, I spent a Saturday making sandwiches for hungry kiddos and I went down a water slide in January to benefit the Special Olympics. I didn't realize how much they did in the community to give back and it's awesome to be a part of that!

Is there anything you're scared to try?

I'm a little scared to skate with new people. I'm just more comfortable with my team and my league. But this off-season, I skated in a mash-up and in a scrimmage with some of the men's players and I didn't die, so that was good.

If you could choose one skill in roller derby to perfect in an hour, what would it be and why?

Hockey stops. Being able to stop on a dime comes in handy and it also looks really cool!

If you could go back and talk to yourself as a newbie skater, what advice would you give her?

With less than 2 years in, I'm still a newbie myself. But I would say: newbie self, don't give up just because it's hard and don't give up because you're discouraged. Recognize the gains you are making, large and small, and keep going with it. Most importantly: don't compare yourself to others. Focus on your goals at your pace.
