April 2024 : Skater of the Month
Slash Ann Destroy (Katherine Mercer)
How long have you been skating?
I’ve been playing derby since 2018. I went through DDD’s Underworld program and have been with Dallas the entire time.
When did you first hear about roller derby and when did you join a league?
I heard about derby about 10-12 years ago. I lived in California at the time and really wanted to give it a try because I loved roller skating, but convinced myself there was no way I could do it. I found it again a few years after moving to Texas and decided to jump in and give it a try.
How did you come up with your name?
So I’ve had my name (Slash) longer than I’ve played derby. It was a nickname a coworker gave me because my last name has a hyphen, but he would always say it was really a slash because when I got mad, he said I looked like I was going to slash some people. Eventually everyone at work started calling me Slash.
What position do you play?
I am a blocker with aspirations to be a pivot.
What was the hardest skill for you to learn as a new skater?
Probably lateral movements. Those took me a long time of continuous practice to get down. I still feel like they could be faster.
What's your favorite post-bout meal?
I love Mexican food. A plate of street tacos or a burrito would be my first choice.
What do you like to do outside of derby?
I enjoy baking and reading books. I even have a bookworm tattoo.
Do you have any advice for new skaters?
Be patient and give yourself some grace. Everyone develops their skills at a different pace. Also, as a hardcore introvert, I recommend getting involved in league duties. It’s a great way to develop friendships with a lot of really awesome people.
